本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Yesterday when I crossed road with my friend, who has been in Toronto for quite some years, I found she didn't know the exact regulation about crossing road. Then we began to talk about that.

I found she had quite limited knowledge on the road rules, although she has already got her driver's license of G1. She admitted that she didn't read the official driver's handbook, what she read is only a booklet in Chinese for preparing for test. There's no systematic elaboration on such a booklet, what's on it is only several sets of testing paper.

Obviously your knowledge of road driving is far away from enough if you only read such kind of booklet! You probably don't know when you should stop, when you have or haven't the right-of-way, etc. It's very dangerous if you drive without knowing them.

Another point is, if more and more Chinese pass the writing test by only reading the Chinese 应试指南 and not have a systematic knowledge of traffic laws, how can the other people trust Chinese driver's driving? We've already heard some stories about discrimination to Chinese on driver's road-test.

Here's my advice to all those want to take a driver's paper test: Go to any office of Ministry of Transportation, buy this book and read thoroughly:

The Official Driver's Handbook

In Ontario, it costs $7.95.

Don't read those 考题集 any more.

There's no shortcut for obtaining a driver's license. Take care of yourself, your safety, your future, as well as other's.
