Prime Minister Harper issues statement on Canadian Multiculturalism Day

June 27, 2006
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement to mark Canadian Multiculturalism Day:

"Today is a day for all Canadians to celebrate our nation's rich multicultural heritage.

"Canada is a nation of immigrants. For more than 400 years, men and women have come to these shores in search of new opportunities and a better life for themselves and their families. These newcomers have brought with them valuable skills, a commitment to hard work and a strong desire to succeed. They have added immeasurably to every community in which they have settled. And they have laid the foundation for the Canada we know and love today - a nation that is strong, united, independent, and free.

"In the 21st century, millions of people around the world still view Canada as a land of opportunity - a country in which where you're going matters more than where you come from. And every year, our country benefits from the arrival of thousands of men and women drawn by the equality of opportunity that exits here.

"I would urge all Canadians to take time today to celebrate the tolerant, open and generous society we have created, which welcomes people of all backgrounds to grow and prosper as part of the Canadian family."

    • 'celebrate' is very interesting English word, in your translation, you use 2 Chinese words 庆祝,庆贺, any other trying?
      • VERY GOOD QUESTION, Table! 纪念 should be more precise!
celebrate....observe.....keep....or 纪念 -- this is more precise a translation of "celebrate" under a lot of circumstances including the case here.

Thank you Table for pointing it out! :)
      • i think i should invent a new expression "纪庆" to more accurately translate "celebrate"! :))
    • Harper is interesting person, seems he had similar ideas with Liberals: freedom, equal opportunity. But under his administration the news we heard is the Government officials checked the ID in shopping mall entrance.
      • my opinion is: there's no absolute freedom or the other way. for example, when people are in survival mode (e.g., war), one should not expect as much freedom as under normal/peaceful condtions.
        • maybe I am talking about a kind of atitude, with the totally different attitude, we could jump to totally different conclusion about the same fact or the same issue.
