Rebuttal to qibinglian(骑兵连连长): Benson vs. Jim

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Being a physician does not qualify you to be a politician. I never said it is. But Benson is more than a physician. He has served on the Board of Police Services, which governs all the police forces in Toronto with great responsibilities. Benson’s decision made at this Board has affected the safety of our streets; it is a life and death issue. Benson has also served on Hospital Boards, and community agency like CareFirst, his decision making directly affects the health care and social services. These positions Benson has require real responsibility. If anyone wants to compare the governing experience of Jim and Benson, I think you need to present facts and evidence. I don’t recall Jim has being sitting at any significant Board level making contributions to our community DIRECTLY like Benson has done. Being a voice for a community at public events is good, like Jim has done and I give him credit for that. But it is empty words if you can not back it up by your actions and records.

MP in opposition can be an effective voice as a check and balance, if it is done well. My beef with Jim rest squarely on his and his party’s refusal to fully re-address the head tax issue. He and his party has failed the trust of our community, and for that matter his voters and supporter from the past. He knows that his Party was wrong on the issue of Chinese head tax, and admitted privately, but does not have the integrity to tell his Party boss so. Now that is a 墙头草.

Someone has raised issue of leadership, and implied that Jim has done so by showing up at press conference organized by 华联会. Please be reminded that 华联会 ONLY invited Jim and their Liberal friends to be there, knowing full well that they will gain political points. Honest to God, friends from Rolia could easily have done the same thing, and raised some amount of fund if 华联会 did not put their best foot forward first. The money they raised come from you and me, come from our love and cares for the victims in Sichuan. That money raised did not come from Jim, or from 华联会. That amount of money raised says nothing about Jim’s leadership skills. If you want to talk about Jim’s leadership in helping the people in Sichuan during the fundraising periods, I have only one question for him: where is his leadership when he knows full well that 华联会 was sitting on the million dollar emergency relief fund and did not transfer the fund to Red Cross until last week, and he did nothing about it? We need to remember that bulk of this money was donated by people working hard labour with sweat and tears. What Jim has demonstrated is not leadership. Rather political opportunistic instinct. I stand by what I said in the earlier post that there is very little about Jim in the public services records other than pictures of him cutting ribbons and toasting cheers.

There are two yardsticks you can test for someone’s commitment and dedication to community services. All you need to see is if a person is putting his own money where his mouth is; and to see if he is willing to lead by example, willing to take a personal loss for the greater good of a community. Knowing Jim and Benson both for years, I am afraid that Jim has failed these tests, and Benson has passed. The other one who have passed these tests in our Chinese community is Dr. Joseph Yu-Kai Wong, my hero.

Saying nice things for our community is good, and helpful; but doing thing is better, like what Joseph Yu-Kai Wong and Benson Lau did, is doing, and will contiune to do.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
