Let the poorly managed, overly risk-taking financial institutions fail!

Do not be fooled. The $700 billion (ultimately $1 trillion or more) bailout is not predominantly for mortgages and homeowners. Instead, the bailout is for mortgage-backed securities. In fact, some versions of these instruments are imaginary derivatives. These claims overlap on the same types of mortgages. Many financial institutions wrote claims over the same mortgages, and these are the majority of claims that have "gone bad."

At this point, such claims have no bearing on the mortgage or housing crisis; they have bearing only on the holders of these securities themselves. These are ridiculously risky claims with little value for society. Consider the following analogy: It is as if many financial institutions sold "earthquake insurance" on the same house. When the quake hits, all these claims become close to worthless-but the claims are simply bets disconnected from reality.

    • The bailout deal passed. 'socialism for the rich and dog-eat-dog capitalism for the rest of us'. Good work
        • The last few weeks give me a feeling that the greedy financial elite like Henry Paulson is really the President who runs the show. Stupid, do-nothing Bush is just manupilated by them all those years.
Why the likes of CNN, NBC are so enthusiastically support Obame now? Maybe they believe he will more likely be the next lamp-duck, do nothing President who is only good at talking.
              • it's impossible to be financial conservative while spending billions in a war.

    • When the executives of those greedy banks justify their billion dollar bonus, they said it was just 10% of the profits. We know those profits were all generated by their tricks, gimmicks and outright fraud.
Now they lose $700 B, and they should at least pay back that 10% = 70 B big bucks before asking
government for help. Sell their yacht, castles, island, beach houses, planes, RVs, and pay it up!
30 years ago, some owners of the failed banks blow their brian out because they have to pay
themselves for their failures or go to jail, Now what? They take all the money when their banks profit, and let others pay the price when their banks lose. George Bush is a shame
